The fast cell division and the disorderly growth cytological help the emergence of mutations, hallmark of the carcinogenesis process. Malignant neoplasm of breast sets a serious problem in the current public health setting. This reality is justified by its high incidence, morbidity and mortality, as well as the high cost involved in your treatment. Objective: describe the epidemiological characteristics of women breast cancer hospitalizations from 2008 to 2014. Methods: It´s a cross-sectional study conducted with informations collected in DataSUS database. Results: In the period 2008-2014, it were registered 271,362 hospitalizations resulting from breast malignancy in Brazil. The Southeast region had the highest hospitalization rates, with 51.15%. While analyzing the age group, women aged between 45 and 49 accounted for more hospitalizations, immediately followed by the age group between 50 and 54 years. The white woman was affected more prominently in 45.85% of cases. Over this period, 16.711 deaths from breast malignancy in women were recorded. Conclusion: The Ministry of Health has implemented public policies for cancer care in recent decades with the aim of reducing the incidence and mortality rates related to malignant neoplasm of breast. However, the last six years, the mortality rate increased linearly. A possible explanation for the prominence of breast cancer cases reported in the Southeast region is related to higher education in the region and consequently, greater knowledge about the timing of the realization of breast self-exam. The age group between 45 and 49 years had a higher incidence rate of breast cancer. This statistic supports the American College recommendation of mammography performance annually for women between 45 and 49 years.
