Pontifícia Universidade Católica de GoiásTo identify scientific evidence on the role of nurses and women in the prevention of breast cancer. An integrative review was carried out with advanced searches in January 2017, in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature database (LILACS) with Health Science Descriptors: Breast Neoplasm, Nursing, Primary Prevention, by means of the boolean operator or. As inclusion criteria, we approached articles published in the period from 2013 to 2017 that explicitly met the objective of the study, and as exclusion criteria were reports of experience, articles of reflection, theses, dissertations and editorials. We found 2.608 articles, where we first screened the title and selected 29 articles that dealt with our theme. After reading the articles in full, we were able to answer the question “What is the role of nurses and women in the prevention of breast cancer?”. Our findings evidenced that nurses have a role in primary care, perform preventive actions regarding the severity of the disease, in a unique way, through educational actions, need to instruct women with breast self-examination and self-care. Another important finding is that women recognize the need for breast cancer prevention. However, only 80% of women know to perform breast self-examination, 65.5% report monthly, 12.5% have never performed breast self-examination, and 23 % of women over 40 years do not undergo mammography. It is believed that the nurse has a sublime importance in breast cancer prevention during the educational process of self-examination, and women should be aware of doing regular clinical breast exams and preventive self-care measures.Breast neoplasm, Nurse, Primary prevention
