KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION IN PROGNOSTIC FACTORS AND SURVIVAL OF PATIENTS WITH BREAST CANCER: A COHORT STUDY

Programa de Mastologia/Universidade Federal de GoiásTo evaluate the influence of breast self-examination (BSE) in prognostic factors, type of surgical treatment and survival in patients with breast cancer Prospective cohort study with data obtained through medical record of patients diagnosed with breast cancer since 1993 until 2004. All patients were treated and followed up at Mastology Program of the Federal University of Goiás until 2015. Knowledge and practice of breast self-examination were correlated with overall survival, locoregional disease-free survival, distance-free survival, age, tumor size, histological type, histological grade, type of surgical treatment performed, estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER2 oncoprotein We studied 224 patients. Seventy-four percent of breast self-examination knowledgeable patients practices it regularly. Knowledgeable and practitioner patients had a lower mean age compared to non-knowledgeable and non-practicing patients (51.1 ± 11.4 x 56.2 ± 10.8; p = 0.003 and 49.9 ± 10.6 x 55.3 ± 12.0; p = 0.001, respectively). There was statistical significance for knowledgeable patients in tumors greater than 50 mm compared to non-knowledgeable (17.7 x 34.9%; p = 0.03; respectively). There was no statistical significance to knowledge or practice of breast self-examination and histological type, histological grade, type of surgical treatment realized, estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER2 oncoprotein. The knowledge and practice of breast self-examination did not influence the locoregional disease-free survival (p = 0.89 and 0.55, respectively); distance disease-free survival (p = 0.88 and 0.52, respectively) and overall survival (p = 0.81 and 0.47, respectively). Knowledge and practice of breast self-examination did not influence the overall survival, distance disease-free survival neither locoregional desease-free survival. However, the knowledge led to lower percentage of tumors larger than 50 mm.Breast neoplasm, BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION, Health knowledges, attitudes, practices
