Objective: to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the population and evaluate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and breast cancer. Methods: this is a case-control study of women between 18 and 65 years accompanied in the Mastology service Barão de Lucena Hospital, with breast cancer and benign breast diseases. The participants, after consent, underwent interview to fill a structured questionnaire and the collection of blood for blood concentration of 25 (OH) D. Results: The sample had 12 subjects, 8 (66.7%) with malignancy and 4 controls (33.3%) with benign pathology. The average age at diagnosis was 47.5 years and the mean concentration of 25 (OH) D was 21.25 ng / ml (SD: 7.84). The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the sample was 58.3%, and 75% in patients with cancer. Several independent and dependent variables were analyzed, showing higher levels of vitamin D in patients with regular physical activity (p = 0.019). Conclusion: there was a high frequency of vitamin D deficiency among patients with breast cancer and strong association with low levels of physical activity. Supplementation remains controversial.
