“The objective of this study was to examine sociodemographic characteristics of patients with breast cancer and compare them to patients without the disease. It is a Case-control study conducted with 256 women and 90 cases and 166 controls, matched by age and body mass index (BMI). The cases were from Mastology Program of a federal public hospital in Goiânia, Goiás. The characteristics studied were:. Age, education (years of schooling), race, marital status, income and origin, collected through pre-tested questionnaire and standardized. Data were analyzed using Epi Info version 7.1.5, using test T-test (continuous variables) and chi-square (categorical variables), considering p <0,05 as statistically significant. It was found that the average age of patients was 52,58 ± 11,08 years and controls 52,76 ± 11.15 years (p = 0,97), considering the pairing of inclusion in the study. Regard education it was observed that the total study period ranged from 0 to 17 (cases) and 1 to 25 (controls), with less education among cases (? = 7,95 ± 4,08 years) compared to controls (? = 10,93 ± 4,75) (p <0.000). For the race, it was observed that 75,56% of the cases declared black /brown, higher prevalence than found in controls (59,64%) (p = 0,01). For marital status, it was found that 55,56% of the cases and 57,58% of controls had companion, with no significant difference (p = 0,76) between groups. Regarding render it was found that the minimum average wage per capita among the cases was smaller (0,84 ± 0,68) compared to controls (2,09 ± 2,73) (p <0,001). As regards the origin, it was found that 54,44% of cases and controls were 15,15% of the interior of Goiás (p <0,001).
