“OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the number of mammography units available, their geographical distribution and exams production in Brazil, geographical regions and Federation States (UF). METHODOLOGY: The data refer to mammography units in use and available to the National Health System (SUS) were collected from the National Health Data Center (CNES/DATASUS). It was analyzed the relationship of a mammography unit/240.000 habitants, following the recommendation of the Ministry of Health. The equipment were georeferenced according to their location and the county seat. It compared the expected production exams against the production of performed exams. RESULTS: In 2015 in Brazil were in use 4.356 mammography, wich 2.102 (48.3%) were available for SUS. Considering the estimated population for the same year, it can be inferred that there was one mammography unit/46.935 habitants, which is equivalent to an excess of 4.1 times more than the recommended. This ratio becomes 1.5 times when considering the amount of mammography available for SUS in the country. Regarding macroregions, all were overweight and ranged from 0.9 (North) to 2.1 (South) (p<0.05). Analysis by UF varied from zero (Distrito Federal) to an excess of 6.4 (Paraiba) (p<0.05). Considering the maximum distance of 60km to access the examination, it was found that small areas of Brazil did not meet this indicator. On the exams production, the technology park would be able to carry out exams 12.612.000 and were performed 2.648.353, which equals 21% of production capacity in the country. At macroregions capacity ranged from 28.7% in the Southeast to 7.5% in the Midwest (p<0.05), while that UF, DF was the one with the lowest production capacity (3.3%) and Sao Paulo most 31.9% (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The number of mammographs in use in Brazil is larger than necessary. Their geographical distribution is unequal and the number of examinations is far below capacity. Keywords: Mammography; Screening; Health Services Coverage; National Health System.
